Optional pre-wetting of the wood when using waterbased finishes. Using fine-grit wet and dry sandpaper to remove dust that stuck on the last coat. You want to remove any old paint flakes or dust thats been left on the surface.
Work a paint scraper from every direction keeping the blade flat against the wood so you dont create gouge marks. There are many different wood conditioners available on the market. Soak your hardware in a good cleaner.
